Control of Lake Wanaka To be Finalised

Lake County Council Meeting

To finalise the matter of control of Lake Wanaka and wharves a deputation from the Lake County Council is to meet the district superintendent of Marine at Wanaka on Tuesday, September 9. This was decided at the monthly meeting of the council.

Present at the meeting were: —Crs D. H. Cockburn (chairman), D. C. Aubrey, W. A. McLean, D. R. Rowe and W. H. Thompson. An apology for leave of absence was granted to C'r T. E. Bryant. The Upper Wakatipu Progressive League communicated in reference to the Rees River Bridge asking that the council further consider the , proposal to widen the bridge. It was resolved to advise the league that the council could not accede to the request for the reasons previously supplied.

The Southland County Council advised that proposals for a new bridge over the Mataura River, Fairlight Station, were being investigated and that the Lake County Council would be further advised. Received.

.The treasurer’s monthly report revealed a satisfactory position in reference to finance. Accounts amounting to £132:5 14s 2d were passed for payment leaving a gross debit balance of £4986 5s Bd. The net debit balance, after deducting rates, arrears and revenue outstanding, amounted to £2222 17s fid in comparison with £2883 3s 3d for the corresponding period of last year.

The Historical Committee of Lake County and Internal Boroughs wrote seeking the council’s approval of the basis of cost set out for the payment of expenses in publishing the historical volume. Agreed to. Mr D. Rowe was appointed to represent the council on the committee in place of Mr Leo Lee, resigned.

The Southland Catchment Board gave statutory notice to the council to make and levy an administrative rate of |d in the f on all rateable property in the County which is in the board’s area. Received.

Mr T. E. Thompson of Frankton, wrote seeking permission to install a cattlestop on Punt roajl and also to -cultivate the overgrowth on the roadsides. Granted subject to statutory provisions being complied with.

Mr B. H. Umbers, on behalf of Mr I. Penrose, Wanaka, wrote seeking permission to connect drainage to the drain iu Ardmore street. Deferred pending an inspection of the Riding, in September next.

Mr D. Scott of Rees Valley, Glen* orchy, sought the council’s attention in effected repairs to the road. The engineer stated that the work required the use of a dozer. Resolved that the engineer submit a report to the next meeting.

Permission was granted to Mr W. J. Ironside, Wanaka, to clear trees from Roche street and Stratford terrace, Wanaka.

Mr R. H. Bryant of Kinloch wrote stating that the Routeburn Valley road, above Mr L. Groves’ homestead, a distance of 3 miles, required gravelling. The writer sought the council’s attitude in the. matter. The chairman stated that this portion of road was principally a tourist road therefore Government assistance was being sought in. the matter of expense as the council’s finances did not provide for such work. It was resolved that Mr Bryant be advised of the council’s efforts to obtain Government assistance and that he would be farther advised as to the council’s attitude.

Mr B. H. Umbers of Wanaka made application for registration as a Funeral Director. Granted. The report of the Health Inspector revealed a satisfactory state of conditions throughout the county. The Traffic Inspector submitted his report for the moifth of July covering matters of general traffic supervision. Received. The County Engineer’s monthly report covered the activities of the staff and plant for the month grading and snow clearing having been carried out ou the high level roads. The gravelling gang had been mainly employed in gravelling the Queenstown- Wanaka Main Highway. Snow removal and gravelling ahd been carried out on Skipper’s main highway. ‘ The engineer referred to the continuous trouble being caused by the Blue Slip, Skippers Highway, stating that the road had been blocked for the greater part of the period. It was decided , on the recommendation of the engineer, to use water power in an endeavour to sluice the spoil into the river as the slip had reached the stage when clearing operations were of a very temporary extent. Water tables and culverts had been given attention on the Glenorchy-Para-dise main highway. Gravelling of the worst portions would be attended to during the ensuing period. Grading patching had been carried out in the Wanaka Riding and further progress had been made with the clearing of water tables and road widening at the Glendhu Bluffs. The approaches tio the temporary bridge at Jack Hall’s creek had been completed. The Motatapu River diversion work was well under way. Water tabling and ditching had been carried out on highways and roads in the Arrow Riding and repairs had been effected to the Coronet Peak Station road. In the Kingston Riding water tables and culverts had received attention. Proposed work for the ensuing period included general maintenance and the completion of works referred to in the monthly report. Subject to the approval of the Public Works Department it was decided to proceed with the work of clearing the Blue Slip in .accordance with the Engineer’s recommendations. The engineer submitted proposals for the improvement of Paulks’ road, Wan-' aka. It was resolved that decision in the matter be deferred pending an inspection of the road during the next month. The engineer was instructed to carry out repairs to the Long Gully track, also to effect repairs to the handrailing on the footbridge over Scott’s Creek at Garston. The county chairman, Cr D. H. Cockburn, presented a lengthy report upon the proceedings of the Counties’ Conference held recently in Christchurch. “Doctor, I can’t remember the name of the medicine you prescribed, but it did me a lot of good.” “What for?” “ Loss of memory.” “If you’re the lady who lifted mother’s face,” said the small boy at the beauty parlour, “ you’d better come round and lift father’s.
