OBITUARY
PROFESSOR JOHN COLLIE In the passing of Professor John Collie not only has New Zealand lost one of its most prominent scholars and churchmen, but also the Queenstown Parish has lost an old pastor and friend. Mr Collie came to Queenstown in 1925, and during his ministry he made a permanent place for himself in the hearts of his people. He left Queenstown in 1031 to become, by invitation, Professor of New Testament Studies in the Theological Hall, and the same year he was elected to the Moderatorship of the General Assembly. Since that time he has had a long and distinguished record of service to the church at large and' in other activities. He was a foundation member of the Southland P.S.S.A. At the time of his death he was engaged in the onerous task of writing the Centennial history of the Church in Otago ■and Southland. As a tribute to his character I can do no better than quote from Alexander Don’s “Golden Road.”: —
Mr Collie’s pulpit ministrations showed to a, marked degree the qualities of mind and heart, producing a gracious impression, and diffusing a wholesome influence. The traits of manliness and humility, of friendliness and tenderness, made him an outstanding spiritual guide. The more his sterling Christian character is tested by every achievement in his onward career, the more it reveals him as a truly accomplished, humble,
consecrated Christian gentleman
