Lonliest Job in the World

Thirteen ships are to sail out into the Atlantic and remain possibly for' months on end, in one spot. The task of the crews will be to report weather by radio, and be always ready to go to the assistance of air liners in distress. The scheme was approved at the Dublin International Air Conference. The first vessels to be employed will be steamers of at least 3,000 tons, which, equipped with the most modern weather-recording apparatus, will be in constant touch with all the important weather bureaux on land. So that the information they send can be linked up with the reports that come regularly from Atlantic liners, the vessels employed in the new service will be located away from regular shipping routes. Seaplanes will form part of their equipment. More jobs for men who do not mind being lonely will be available at new weather-reporting stations to be set up on the edge of the Arctic Circle.
