“IT’S A FAIR COW”
“ Cows ” is ever a controversial subject in the Queenstown district, and one local gardener, who discovered part of his garden reduced to shambles one morning recently, had every reason to believe that the wandering stock menace had at last turned his way. “ Cows ” of all descriptions—including the type that leave gates open —were heartily deplored. The shambles consisted of cabbages reduced to stalks only, and the tops of his carrots razed to ground level. Evidence that the “ cows ” had had their fill was to be seen by the quantity of leaves left lying around. After his first rush of indignation had subsided, however, the gardener became a little puzzled. If cows were to • blame how was it .that the footprints were definitely not bovine? The whole affair was something of a mystery until the small grandson arrived home from school. On being shown the damage, he hastened to absolve the cows from blame, and proudly explained that the damage was simply a little “sport” he and his mates had enjoyed with sticks the day before! Needless to say Grandpop and the lad didn’t play speaks for a day or two.
