ICE SKATING

Wakatipu Club Meeting A meeting of the local skating enthusiast was held in the Library Room on Wednesday evening, Dr W. A. Anderson occupying the chair. The secretary, Mr S. Shearer read the minutes of the last general meeting of the club and also presented a financial statement. The election of office bearers resulted as follows; —Mr A. H. Wheatley was elected patron of the elub;Dr W. A. Anderson was re-elected president; vicepresidents were elected as follows — Messrs Grant Forbes, J. Edgar and J. C. Cockburn; chairman, Mr H. Sew Hoy; secretary, Mr S. Shearer and Mr G. Buxton (conjointly) ; committee — Miss B. Home, Miss E. Mcßride, Miss M. McDowall; Miss P. Wheatley, Miss E. McLean, Mrs Shearer, Mr L. R. Lewis, Mr R. Sew Hoy, Mr W. Sew Hoy, Mr B. Marshall, Mr D. Knowles, Mr G. Nelson, Mr 0. Gray. Ice committee, Mr L. R. Lewis, Mr W. Sew Hoy, chairman and secretary.

Various localities were discussed by those present and it was decided to concentrate on four areas, the pond in the Tourists Departments Park and the Sports Ground area, these two being the most handy for local enthusiasts, Downeys lagoon and a pond up on the Skippers Saddle were selected as places where ice carnivals could be held. Two delegates from the, Queenstown Progressive League were present at the meefc ing and informed the club that the league was interested in the matter of skating and would co-operate and help in any Avay that Avas possible. The delegates informed the .meeting that the league had made arrangements for Downeys lagoon and this area had been flooded and the ice was in good condition. A member of the Tourist Department Group Travel Service had been taken to this lagoon and had been 'deeply impressed with the possibilities of running a series of week-end ice carnivals %n this area. This agent had informed a league representative that his department would be Availing to organise and arrange a series of group travel visits if good ice skating Avas available. A resolution Avas passed asking the delegates of the league to convey the thanks of the club for the interest the league had taken in the matter.

It was resolved to write to both schools asking the teachers to impress

on the children not to interfere and damage the ice as had been the case on the new sports area. It was decided to make application to the Queenstown Borough Council for the use of an area in the new sports ground as a skating area. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
