ICE SKATING POPULAR
Great enthusiasm has been shown by the young' people of this town to that grand old sport of ice skating. Starting in the early part of last week when the ice was first bearable, skaters could be seen moving towards the Government Tourist Department pond in ever increasing numbers, particularly in the evenings when the days toil has been finished. Owing to children having damaged the surface of the ice in the sports area an attempt was made to flood same, out of the borough water mains but this did not prove effective owing to there being too' much seepage. On Saturday and Sunday, Downey’s lagoon was the popular rendezvous for about 70 people, when two members of the Queenstown Progressive League were in attendance and supplied coffee and biscuits which was appreciated by those present. Skaters who have been out to this lagoon consider that perfect conditions prevail there for skating, and after two solid days at the sport the surfa.ee shows hardly a mark. Situated at the bottom of the Coronet Peak slopes this pond has the advantage that it receives ipractically no sun arid while ponds in closer • proximity to Queenstown are breaking up, this lagoon can still be used. In, conjunction with Group Travel tours have been promised bv a Government Tourist Agent who lately visited and inspected this area it is hoped to run a full
