FOOTBALL NOTES

Wakatipu v. Blues Match Wakatipu v. Blues match provided the spectators an interesting game without being spectacular. This no doubt could be accounted for by the state of the ground and the greasy ball. Hillis, full-back for Blues, played for the Southland junior team last season, and ho displayed some of his best form in this game. His place-kicking alone is a great asset to his team. Graham Douglas showed a lot of pace in the loose rushes for Wakatipu. Fred Kae and Leo Forde worked like Trojans in the tight and never let up all day. lon McKenzie, who played for Queenstown a couple of seasons back, was a useful link in the Blue’s backs. Nelson Thompson was one of the highlights of the game. McDonald, a former Christ’s College boy, played an excellent game as halfback for Blues. The Wakatipu backs, although sound in defence, were not impressive, the ball never getting as far as the wings. Spence, the Wakatipu half, played a useful game, his backing-up being very good. This player should try and improve his delivery from the base of the scrum. R. Cumberbeaeh broke very fast from the side of the scrum, and on his play is the most improved player in the county. R. Scott is a good front row forward. The Wakatipu forwards played well in the loose but have a lot to learn about rucking and line-out play. Club coaches could spend time on these subjects. J. Allen is playing well, his tackling being a feature of his play. V. McMillan, official line umpire for the Queenstown team, has been showing a fair amount of pace up and down the touchline. W. Hayward. is giving general satisfaction with the whistle.
