THE STORY
The picture takes it’s theme from the heroic job clone by Merchant seamen during the war, the world over. A tanker is torpedoed during foggy weather. She breaks into flames and is torn by explosions. The ship is abandoned and one of the life boats rammed by the submarine. A raft the few survivors. From this he-man setting the story continues as the men, back in port once more, sign on another vessel. Their convoy is bound for Murmansk in Russia and is attacked by a pack of “ U ” boats and a grim chase begins, with the enemy securing aid from the Luftwaffe, By clever manoeuvres, the ship lures the submarine to destruction and, battered, but with cargo safe, she makes the journey successfully. There’s riproaring action in this film for all who like their film fare thrilling and the glorious page from history will have a universal appeal. Produced with a fidelity to detail, the picture gives Bogart and the cast every opportunity to relive a story that the ears had become accustomed to but which the eyes had never seen. The hurly-burly boys are not glamorised in this virile story.
