LOCAL BODIES’ ASSOCIATION

Importance of Work Emphasised The importance of the work being done by the South Island Local Bodies’ Association was emphasised by Mr J. N. Armour at the conference between representatives of local bodies and Southland Members of Parliament. He was speaking to a remit from the Lakes County Council, urging that Southland Members of Parliament should give full support to the work and activities of the association. Mr Armour said that the South Island sometimes appeared to be of less importance in the eyes of the Government than the North, but it could not be doubted that the efforts and conferences of the association had brought about results that had partly rectified tliis position. There was still much to accomplish and it was for this reason that the association asked for the special interest and co-operation of Members of Parliament. He had been asked to call particular attention to the fact that the annual conference of the association was to be held this year in Invercargill. Few Members of Parliament had attended past conferences of the association, though they had been invited to do so. It would be of mutual benefit if South Island Members of Parliament found it possible to attend the annual conference in Invercargill next October and to support the important matters sponsored by the association. Mr T. L. Macdonald, M.P., said he thought all South Island Members of Parliament appreciated the work of the association. However, it might be difficult for them to attend the conference in October because Parliament might he sitting then. The Hon. T. F. Doyle, M.L.C., said he was surprised at the last conference in Nelson that there were no Southland Members of Parliament present. He thought that members should attend these conferences if possible so as to get the opinions of the local bodies.
