SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL

ARRIVAL AT SPRINGS

The Helensville Dist. Soldiers' Memorial is now practically completed, and the first portion of the base was delivered at the Domain Grounds on Friday afternoon last, having arrived from Auckland by motor lorry. The local committee accepted a design by Mr W. H. Feldon, sculptor, of Auckland, some time back. The foundation was constructed three months ago of concrete terraces, 3ft 6iri '' ' ' in height. Above this will be. a', ' I base of Sydney sandstone, 3ft 6in square, bearing four large shields with the names of the 33 men from Helensville and Mairetahi who made the supreme sacrifice, < This will be surmounted by,. -. moulded caps, on which is carve(lj^ the words " Helensville - Maire^r tahi." The statue is a well- •./' ■ executed life - size figure of a - ».• soldier in full gear of the N.Z. . •_ Rifle Brigade. This is carved out of Piermont sandstone from Sydney.

It is understood that the Gov-ernor-General, Lord Jellicoe, also the Prime Minister and Minister of Public ;Works, have signified their intention of being present at the unveiling ceremony, the date of which will be considered at a meeting-'of the committee shortly. It is not expected the memorial will be unveiled before the New Year.
