A tag was affixed to the balancesheet of the Rangiora High School accounts to the effect that £5 2s paid as interest on a bank overdraft was contrary to law and that the members of the Board of Governors would be expected to refund the amount out of their own pockets. This was followed by a letter from the Attorney-General peremptorily demanding payment of the money within seven days, failing which steps would be taken to surcharge the members of the board jointly and severally with the amount- The board held a special meeting and came to the conclusion that there was no way out of the difficulty but to pay up and look pleasant, 11s 6d being the amount of each member's share.
When the party broke up at one o'clock Simkins realised that he was a bit too sozzled to go home to the wife; but after thinking it over he tossed up and decided to chance it. At his gate he steadied himself, then crept up the path, and on the doorstep carefuly removed his boots. With infinite patience and a panicky dread of hiccoughs he crawled upstairs inch by inch, slowly opened the bedroom door and slipped inside. Then in the pitchy dark and grave-like silence in which every hushed movement sounded to his fevered ears like a shattering crash, he undressed himself. It was a long and nerve-wracking job, but at last Simkins managed it; then he stealthily crawled into bed and hung perilously on about two inches of the extreme edge. When morningcame he was alone and it was then he remembered that Mrs. S. was spending a few nights with an old school-chum.
