Christmas Day this year falls on a Sunday, and will consequently be.'observed on Monday, 26th December. In reply to a question the Secretary of Labour says - "Shop assistants may be employed until 10 p.m. on the previous SaturdaySprovided the hours of work for the*rweek do not exceed those provided by the Act (48) or m any award or industrial agreement." Shops which usually observe the statutory half-holiday on Saturday are permitted to substitute another day of the week for the half-holiday, and keep open on Saturday.
