FOOTBALL
WAIROA V. KAIPARA,
The Wairoa reps, visited Helensville on Saturday last and met the Kaipara team on the Showgrounds, a very close and hard game ending in a last minute win for the visitors by 6 poinis to 5. Kaipara team had four or five changes from the team originally selected, and Wairoa were not at full strength. The fine weather attracted a large number of spectators, who were treated to some good football.
In the first spell Brady scored for Wairoa from a struggle near the line ; Caldwell failed with the kick. In the second spell Mowbray ran through the opposition and scored a neat try, which was converted by Kerr-Taylor. No further score was recorded until right on time, when Smith beat several men, and scored beneath the posts ; Caldwell missed an easy kick.
In the second half a player on each side was ordered off for corn--ing to blows. Mr J. Downer had control of the game.
In the evening the K.R.U. entertained both teams fto a smoke concert in the Star Theatre, a very pleasant time being spent. During their stay the visitors were also entertained by Messrs T. Keane and E. R. Baddiley, exresidents of the Wairoa'. Altogether., the team returned home with, a high opinion of the treatment accorded them.
An interesting match will take place on the Showgrounds on Tuesday afternoon next, September 13th, in the shape of a game between the Whangarei Public Schools Union reps, and a team picked from the schools of the Helensville district. The Whangarei reps, are to arrive on Monday, putting up at Mr T. Keane's •Hinemoa House, and returning to Whangarei on Wednesday. The Kaipara Rugby Union has agreed to allow the visiting team all the gate money, to go towards their expenses, which will be fairly heavy. It is hoped that the public will roll up in good style to witness the same, and to assist the visitors by their contributions to the gate money.
