A FRANTIC WOMAN
" I got'mad," said a Raratongan native woman when charged at the Police Court last Friday with being drunk and damaging Constable Hunt's clothing. Evidence showed that on the Thursday night the woman had been given gin by a European man. This unbalanced her vision and she saw things in a wrong light. She was savagely attacking and destroying her household utensils when the constable appeared on the scene. She fiercely attacked him, and being a powerful woman assistance had to be called ; the united energy of four or five men was required to remove the frienzied one to the lock-up. The constable's coat and vest were torn and damaged almost beyond recognition—as though he had emerged from a bear-fight. The owner of the clothes estimated the damage at £5, which the presiding Justices (Messrs J. H. Claridge and Jas. Hand) thought very modest. Accused was ordered to refund that amount to the constable, and was fined jEI for disorderliness, being given three months in which to pay. By her own consent the woman was prohibited for twelve months. She admitted to the Bench being in receipt of military pensions of £14 per month. —In the present state of the law the man who. was the primary cause of this trouble gets off scot free and the woman pays.
