The special and ordinary trains run to Helensville on Show Day were well and fully justified the running of same. A cricket match between Kaukapakapa and Glorit will be played on Saturday. The following Saturday (February 12th) a match between Helensville and Glorit' will be played at Glorit (w.p.) Major-General d'Heldburg, former officer in the army of the Czar, is holding a 35-dollar job as mechanic in a garage |in New York. He knows of seven Russian generals who are sweeping the streets in Finland. On Saturday afternoon a tennis match between Woodhill and Helensville Clubs will be piayed on the Helensville courts. Play commences at 2 o'clock. Woodhill have a strong team, and will extend the local players to their limit. j Tbe sanitary arrangements on the Showgrounds on Saturday were not all that could be desired, and it behoves the Association to get busy and effect improvements. With up-to-date water and drainage in the town, there is no excuse for not having the benefits of these systems. The death- occurred at the Auckland Hospital on Friday last of Mr Paul Francis, late of Helensville, at the advanced age of 88 years. Deceased was a familiar figure around Helensville for a great many years, and was of French descent. The funeral took place at the ocal cemetery on Sunday. The revenue derived from all sources at the Hot Springs Domain on Show Day is easily a record, the sum of £11 6s 3d being taken. For the previous four years the amounts were as follows: 1917, £6 ' 1918, £1 17s 6d ; 1919, £4 14s 6d ; 1920, £9 6s. For the fortnight ending February 2nd, the revenue exceeded Christmas and New Year, amounting to over £70. , At Everybody's on Saturday evening next, Bryant Washburn will appear in '"It Pays to Advertise." The great slogan of the American business people is here adapted into a clever comedy drama, entertaining and rapid-fire throughout. In addition two interesting topical subjects and the usual gazettes go to make up a first-rate programme. The following increase in the interest bearing amounts of the Post Office Savings-bank took effect as from January ♦ Ist 1921 : —On so much of a deposit as does not exceed £500, 4 per cent per annum ; on so much thereof as exceeds £500 and does not exceed £5,000, 3^4 per cent per annum. The maximum amount upon which interest is allowed on any ordinary account is £5,000. A very large number attended the dance in the Agricultural Hall on Show Night, and a pleasant time was spent by everyone. Several attractive dancing items were given by the girls who competed in the dancing events during the day, their efforts drawing forth loud applause. Dance music was played by the Malligan orchestra, and the floor was in great condition. The receipts (nearly £20) were a record, and the hard work involved in clearing the hall of exhibits and converting it into a dance room, in quick time, was amply repaid. Mrs Mantell, of Foxton, recently rereceived a letter from her sister, of Itiveraray, in the Highlands of Scotland, under date November 4th, in which she gives details of the cost of living thereThe writer says : " I saw a letter in one of our newspapers telling people not to think of going to New Zealand just now as living was so high and work scarce. Well if you knew the prices in our country they would stagger you. A £ is just about wortt 5s ; eggs, when obtainable, 5s 6d per dozen, 9d for a small loaf, butter 5s ; and the rationed butter 3s 4d per lb, ham 3s 3d and 4s 6d per lb, and not very goop at that, sugar is more plentiful now, and is down to Is per lb. The comparatively poor entries in the horticultural classes at the Show has drawn forth the suggestion from a correspondent that a flower show held about the end of November would be a good idea. He suggests that an effort be made to form a society to carry out such a scheme, and that the show be held preferably in the Domain Grounds. There is plenty of material available, and if residents and settlers were canvassed, there is no doubt a lot of choice pot plants and other species of flowers and shrubs would be shown. During November some very choice blooms make their appearance, and assembled and shown in a commodious tent, say in the Domain, a very successful show would result, There are a number of enthusiasts in the town, and it remains for someone to make a move in the direction of convening a meeting to discuss the suggestion.
