CHAUTAUQUA
HELENSVILLE — JANUARY
13th to 19th
A meeting of guarantors in connection with the forthcoming Chautauqua session, was held in the Library on Friday evening last. A good deal of routine business was transacted, including the appointment of various committees to canvas the district, attend to publicity, etc. Mr Jas. Stewart was elected chairman of the main committee. The opinion was expressed that a very successful session was probable on this occasion. This year Helensville is in for a treat, as the lecturers and artists are of a high order, both from an educational and entertaining standpoint, and will, without doubt, please every faction of the community. The lecturers scheduled to appear are : Captain Norman Imrie (Canadian), Sumeyah Attiyeh (Assyrian), Joel W. Eastman (American), Captain R. Muir Allan (Scotchman), and Captain Dinsmore Upton (American). Captain Imrie, a rapid fire orator, banging his quips, jests and stories into his address every now and again, keeps his audience on tip toe expectancy. He will lecture on problems facing Uncle Sam and John Bull, and the lecture embraces the much discussed Home Rule for Ireland question. Captain Allan will lecture on " Burns, " his life and character, with tour of the Burns country— 100 slides. Captain Allan was official lecturer with the British mission to U.S.A., official lecturer to British War Office, and served in the British Army over five years. Sumayeh Attiyeh, a dainty Assyrian lady, will give a highly interesting, partly humorous educational lecture on Assyrian life and customs. Joel W. Eastman, a humorist, philosopher and lecturer, will lecture on " Democracy." Hearing Mr Eastman's lecture* you watch Races and Ages going by and see what they did not see, the cause and power that sent them to sublime heights, and to ! desolate decay. He will impress you as having a large vision of ' i life and as an original thinker of fundamental things.
Captain. Upton brings a discussion of man's whole make-up, the pith of his.lecture" baing the physical culture of the body and the culture of the mind. A. most earnest man with a message for all, coming straight for Canada where the Canadian audience has given him a splendid reception everywhere.
The musical portion of the programme is varied to suit all tastes. It contains an Overseas Orchestral Company of six ladies, the Newell Concert Party, Fenwick Newell, tenor, Mary Jane Newell, pianist, and Gertrude Hober, violinist.
The lonian Concert Party of New Zealand and Australian artists, baritone, soprano, violinist and pianist; the Root-Patton Company.—Lulu Root, contralto, late Washington Grand Opera Company ; Lowell Patten, monoJoguist, and singer; The Parnell Company, who render baritone and soprano solos and duets, saxaphone solos and accordeon duets, etc., etc.
Last but not least is the clever young lady Mabel Ferguson, who will give the playlet reading, "Green Stockings."
This year there is to be a new innovation regarding the season tickets. Besides the individual " season " there will be on sale " Family Tickets " at £1. The family tickets allow a whole family to come on the one ticket at the one time, the number of admittances being punched at the door, so that a man with 12 in the family would use the whole ticket by visiting one session, and a family of say four could attend three sessions on the one family ticket.
The commitete consider the family ticket a great asset and as there are only a limited number of these tickets, intending purchasers are advised to get in early.
