ACCIDENTS

During the week quite a number of more or less severe accidents have ococcurred in this district. The most serious was that which occurred last Saturday afternoon to a 12 year old son of Captain Sellars. It appears that a young horse was being broken in, and the animal lashed out and caught the unfortunate b»y on the side of the head, fracturing the skull. Dr Meinhold was called in< and on his advice Dr Carrick Robertson was brought up from Auckland and an operation performed, a piece of bone pressing on the brain being removed The patient, at latest reports, is progressing as favourably as can be expected. Another horse accident ocourred at Kaukapakaps a few days "ago, a son of Mr W. H. Drinnan's being thrown from a horse, and fracturing his collar bone, J)r Meinhold attended this patient, who ~>i also doing well, This morning a severe accident occurred to one of Mr A- J- Skel ton's children, a leg severely gashed with an axe necessitating the doctoi's attention *and .half a dozen stitche3. A severe shaking was experienced by Mr J. Allen while riding a motor bike up Garfield Road on Tuesday evening. It appears that a small dog ran out at the bike, and in swerving to avoid it, the rider skidded and came off, being severely bruised. The badly lighted streets were responsible for a nasty spill to a local resident cm Wednesday evening last week, who was found unconscious rjear the ECHO office, having evidently come in contact with the big telegraph pole near the office. A severe cut on the temple was attended to by Dr Meinhold.
