♦ MEAT MARKET IN ENGLAND PRICES FOR FAT STOCK A New Zealand buyer in England, *t the present time, attended a sale at a small country town and purchas ed stock on behalf of a friend. His friend was pleased with the prices paid, as they were under the current prices—th.it is, in August last. Some 140 fat cattle and 600 fat sheep were sold, and the following were the prices paid by the New Zealand buyers :— CATTLE I 1 Crossbred 3-year-old Hereford steer for £63 15s, about 8001bs. 1 Croßabred 3-year-old Hereford heifer for £59 10s". about 7601b5. 1 Crossbred 4-year-old Holstein heifei for £59 10s, about Blolbs. I South Devon 3-year^old heifer for £47 15s, about 6401b5. 1 North Devon 2£-year-old steer for £54 15s, about 7lolbs. 1 Shorthorn 4£-> year-old cow (slip^ ped calf) for £42, about 6401b5. sheep : 4 Crossbred Oxford Down and Romney 2-tooth wethers at £9 5s ; 96lbs. 4 Crossbred Oxford Down and Romney 2>tooth weathers at £8 I6s 6d; 901b3. 4 Crossbred Border Leicester and SuffolK Downs 2-tooth wethers at £8 5s ; 80lbs. 4 Cheviot wethers at £b Is 6d ; 56lbs. 4 Cheviot wethers at £5 18s 6d ; 56lbs. 10 Hampshire Do»vn fullmouth ewes at £7 5s ; 80lbs. PIGS 24 Pigs ranging from £17 10s to £31 15s each—estimated at 2s per lb. The high prices in England are brought about by the English farmer having an uncontrolled market.
