TO THE EDITOR SIR, —As a ratepayer of Mairetahi Jliding I would Jike to offer a few remarks regarding election of Riding member, I had always taken an unbiassed view of the Shelly Beaoh incident, whero Mr Jas. McLeod was charged with certain irregularities as the result of an exhaustive report by Mr E. Wright (auditor). But it is certainly strange that Mr McLeod has allowed these charges to stand against him for practically three years. And now, as a candidate for election, he oomes forth at the eleventh hour In full war paint, with an attempt to smooth things over. oharges are likely to remain against him until disproved in a constitutional manner. Perhaps we, as ratepayers, do not appreciate as we should, the splendid work performed by our sitting member, Mr Aitkenhead. Such a lot has been done of a permanent natuie and in a thorough manner, typical of the man whom it is our good fortune to have as our representative on the Waitemata County Qouncil. Mr Aitkenhead took office nearly every culvert on the flat was fault y. Pipes had been placed where arches should have . been constructed, and in most cases these pipes were placed below high-tide level. The result of this was that many of our farms were threatened with subniersion through there being no exit for flood water at high tide. The land was souring and Ipsing quality of feed. Thanks to our practical representative, the waterways have bpen improved, the culverts put r-ight and we are richer accordingly. Jvlr McL.eod no doubt did much pioneer work. But the plough has taken the Mi-ace of the pick and the grader the place pf the shovel More up-to-date appliances are now in use,- everything points to progress. The roads are becoming a credit to the district; the main road to Auckland is no longer a * disgrace to the County ; and for all these things no small credit is due to Mr Aitkenhead. The Riding could suffer no greater calamity than to lose Mr Aitkenhead's services. So let us show appreciation of our man at the forthcoming election. —I an), etc., 6 RATEPAYER.
