NEW STORAGE DAM.
[TO THE EDITOR.]
SIR, —Would you allow me space to suggest that the new dam be built with clay, abundance of which is on the ground. The clay is of excellent quality for the purpose, and is better than cement, as it solidifies with age, and a dam built of it is there for ever, provided proper precaution is taken not to allow the flood waters to flow over the top Cement is of very recent date, and, moreover, costs a lot of money from start to finish. The only expense in the above suggestion is for labour, and a few tools and shelter-shed for the men, and the work can be started at once. There are many works, built of clay before the advent of cement, which are standing today as monuments of its suitability for such purposes. The lakes in the park at New Plymouth are formed by clay dams thrown across a gully very similar to the site of this proposed dam. Adam built on these lines would cost less than £1000, and four or five dams of proposed size could be built for the money proposed to be spent on one cement dam. —I am, etc.,
