LADIES' LEAP YEAR BALL

MOST ENJOYABLE

The Leap Year Ball given by the ladies of Helensville in the Lyric Theatre last evening was attended by over 100 couples, and proved most enjoyable and successful. It is eight years to a few days since the ladies exercised the time-honoured privilege of holding a ball on their very own, and the fair sex of to-day proved last night that they have nothing to learn or have forgotten nothing from those days in regard ' to conducting these functions. Hard work and untiring energy is the portion, of all who go on dance committees, but the reward .^omes when the workers know that their .efforts are successful, and that enjoyment has been their guests. Such was iHpptb^e case last evening. Everything wnich could be done to make the function a real success was attended to., and the thanks of mere man are accorded the ladies. The hall was nicely decorated with * lycapodium fern, nikau palms and flowers, and the stage was comfortably furnished with easy chairs, etc. The number present just comfortably filled the floor, which was in-good order for the chief interest of the evening— dancing to some of the most tuneful, timeful and vimful music yet heard up this way, supplied by Sapsford's orchestra of four instruments. The dresses of the ladies were becoming and stylish, and added greatly to the pretty and animated scene. The catering arrangements were in the hands of the committee as well, and the tables set out in the adjoining Star Theatre were filled with a tempting array of salads, jellies, cakes, etc , which were ~ done full justice to by the appreciative assembly. The attentiveness of the ladies who officiated as M.s'C. —Mesdames J. Stewart and J. Vercoe, and Misses K. Dowling and K. McGarvey—was a marked feature of the evening, and no one was allowed to remain a "wall-flower" for very long. The novelty of having the ladies engage their partners for the first half of the programme appealed to ladies and men alike, the former especially entering whole-heartedly into the idea. At 2.30 a.m. the last dance came, and a tired and happy party wended their homeward way, perfectly satisfied that the ladies did wonderfully.

Miss E. Eames and Mrs Eames were secretary and treasurer respectively of the committee, who comprised the following:—Mesdames Hunt, J. A. Wilson, West, Easton, Carling,Screaton, Sandin, Sewell, Vercoe, Coutts, Rimmer, McGarvey, Taylor, E. McLeod, J. Lambert, jun., D, Stewart, F. W. Strange, Barnes, Meinhold, McCardle, Misses B. Wilson, R. Coutts, J. Bailey, E. and'r'K. McGarvey, J. Stewart, M. Stewart, Lee, Becroft, J. Taylor, R, Taylor, E. Donovan, X Dowling, D. Dowling, Simcock, M. Megson, Marion Megson.
