The Kaipara & Waitemata ECHO With which is incorporated "The Kaipara Advertiser & Waitemata Chronicle " Helensville, Thursday, July 22nd. LAST THURSDAY'S POLL.

The result of the polling last Thursday on the water and light scheme came as a surprise to even the most optimistic supporters of the proposals.' Although there are more than 250 ratepayers on the roll, only 120 of them exercised their privilege to vote, and of these only the odd 20 could he counted as opposing the schemes. No doubt the extremely wet weather prevented a good many from attending to vote, but even so the majority tor both proposals is very satisfactory. It is a clear indication that Helensville is moving in the right direction, and that business people and residents realise that if their town is to hold its own in the present and future scheme of things, up to date methods will have to be adopted to make the town a progressive one. The comprehensive manner in which the water supply and lighting proposals have been placed before the ratepayers have made them familiar with what is to be done in both connections. So far as the additional water supply is concerned, the Town Board have arranged with the State Advances Department to borrow the necessary money. The electric light is an entirely different proposition, and the most suitable method of raising the money is by debentures, raised locally as far as possible. It is thought that if £1500 or £2000 of the amount required was raised by private enterprise, the Board would be enabled to approach the State Advances office for the remainder of the money with a \ bite chance of success. The Government will not lend money i straight out foi works such as lighting, which is classed as non- | essential. But Board members anticipate no difficulty in j securing the necessary money for what will prove to be, in it* very short while, an excellent business proposition. Given favourable circumstances, there is every reason to expect the town will be deriving the benefit! of the light before next winter is well advanced.
