HELENSVILLE TOWN BOARD
MONTHLY MEETING, { .
There were present at the above meeting held on Thursday evening, July Bth, the following: Commissioners Stewart (chairman), T. D. Johnson, H. Thompson, and W. Coutts. Crs. M!cLeod and Aitkenhead were absent. MINUTES Minutes of the previous meetin were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE A letter from the Auckland office of the Employers' Association was received, and it was decided to join the Federation at a fee of £1 Is per year. A circular letter from the Hamilton Borough Council respecting the cement shortage was received. It was reported that the agreement between the Waitemata County Council and the Board in connection with the joint maintenance of Ratawiri Road has been fixed up. An application for a building permit, for additions to Mrs McGarvey's residence, was granted Messrs Osborne and Leach. FINANCE, A number .of accounts were passed for payment. The debit balanc* stands at £747. It was decided to sue for defaulters'rates. One member remarked these were quite able to pay, but dodged doing so as long as possible. GENERAL. An offer from Mr Hjorth, donating a quanity of oak trees for plantation in the native reserve by the Library was received. The clerk was instructed to write Mr Hjorth thanking him for his offer, and stating that the Board would take them at the first opportunity. It was decided to get prices for ploughing vacant land (about ZY% acres) in the cemetery reserve. The chairman reported the Boards's foreman had spent a week cleaning up at the cemetery. The Waitemata County Council's objection to contribute to the upkeep of the cemetery was again brought, up. It was stated that adjacent ridings of the County used the area as a burial ground.
The question of framing bylaws for regulating motor traffic in the town district was discussed. At present no regulations existed, and the traffic was practically uncontrolled. On the motion of Cr. Stewart, seconded by Cr. West it was decided that the Board's solicitor obtain copies of by-laws with a view to drafting same for this town district.
Mr N. W. Rimmer waited on the Board in connection with several matters, and obtained particulars (on behalf of the A. and P. Association) regarding the petitions to be circulated in connection with the proposed new railway route from Kumeu to Auckland. The chairman stated that all of the local bodies north of Auckland had been communicated with in regard to the matter. The preliminary cost of the petition would have to be considered. Mr Rimmer stated he thought the Association would contribute their share towards such costs. The meeting then adjourned.
