NEW ZEALAND TOBACCO.
.V powerful company with a capital of £'50,000 id now being formed v ider the style of the National Tobacco Company, Ltd., which will take up tobacco-growing' and manufacturing on a large scale. Four out of the eight directors are well-known Hawkes' Bay men. This company, we understand, will not confine its operations to the Auckland and H.B, districts alone, but would introduce tlie culture into all parts of New Zealand that are suitable for that purpose. The time for stai'ting this enterprise seenib to be well chosen, the prospects are of the brightest, and if the names of tho men at the head of the concern are any indication at all, the success of the company appears to be assured. In the old days the Maoris cultivated the tobacco plant in this district, and it is just possible that certain areaa might be suitable. Tho poorest laud in Virginia grows the bes-t tobacco. Authorities say tobacco poisons the land, as it does tho human system.
