The Kaipara & Waitemata ECHO With which is incorporated "The Kaipara Advertiser & Waitemata Chronicle" Helensville, Thursday, July Bth WATER AND LIGHT.

The attendance at the ratepayers' meeting last evening was fairlylarge and representative, and it is gratifying to realise that a dawning interest is being taken in public affairs. The proposals before the ratepayers on Thursday next are vitally important to the progress of the town, and from a health point of view as well the water scheme is entitled to deep consideration. Helensville is in the fortunate position of having good drainage and sewerage, and •in this respect is ahead of many larger towns. But this system is absolutely dependent on a water supply of sufficient capacity to clean out the drains and sewers at any period. If the supply cannot do this, and fails, say, in the middle of summer, drainage ceases to be a benefit, and becomes a very serious menace to public health. The additional water supply is meant to guard against such a happening, and to our way of thinking it is most important that ratepayers take a serious view of the matter, and emphasise their seriousness by voting solidly for the proposal. The town is getting the additional supply at a very low cost, and the improved supply will meet the constantly increasing demand for more water from the large consumers, which will, ot course, increase the revenue as well. Water charges locally compare' most favorably with other places, and could be increased a good deal before reaching the amounts paid |by users in some towns.

The importance of an electric light system for the town has already been emphasised in these columns, and all that remains to be done in this connection is in the hands of the ratepayers, who, if they go to the poll with open minds, will recognise the fine opportunity they have of doing themselves and their fellow citizens a good turn by voting unanimously tor the proposal. Polling day is Thursday next, and it's not a bit of use having a vote if you don't use it !
