HELENSVILLE TOWN BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING,

There were present at the above meeting held on Thursday evening, June 10th, the following : Commissioners Stewart (chairman), T. D. Johnson, H. Thompson, W. Coutts, H. Aitkenhead, and the clerk (Mr W. F. F. Raisher). Crs. J. McLeod and C. West were absent. MINUTES Minutes of the previous meetin were read, and confirmed. BUILDING BY-LAWS. It was decided to instruct the Board's solicitor to take proceedings in respect to breach of above by-laws, in re spouting not attended to at Lambert's garage. In respect to plans for proposed fish cleaning factoryi Messrs Becroft and Sons wrotestating they had decided not to go on with proposition. ROAD REPAIRS. The chairman reported that metal had been spread on a bad portion of Mill road by the Agricultural Hall, in accordance with the wishes of the deputation which waited on the Board at the previous meeting. Mrs Ellen Robinson wrote complaining of the bad state of the footpath in Fourth Avenue.—lt was decided to repair the path : when shell comes to hand. It was stated that an amount equal to about four year's rates from this portion of the town had I been spent on Fourth Avenue. One member stated that some properties were paying "about 2 6 a year rates, and it was time a re-valuation took place." BOARD'S SOLICITOR. In accordance with notice of motion given at the previous meeting, Cr. Johnson moved that Mr E. T. Field's services as solicitor to the Board be terminated, and that Mr W. E. Barnard be appointed the Board's solicitor. Seconded by Mr H. Thompson and carried. PUBLIC PARK. The minutes of the meeting in connection with the above matter were read and received. COTTAGE HOSPITAL. Minutes of conference re above were read and received. It was decided tliat the Board meet delegates on Tuesday, July 6th. HEALTH DEPARTMENT. In connection with the Board's request that the fee charged the Board for inspector's services be reduced, the Health Department wrote stating that the legislation affecting the whole system of sanitary inspection was to be altered this session. The Department also considered the Helensville Town Board was charged a fair fee, and asked what the Board considered a fair thing. The matter was left in the chairman's hands to deal with. WHAU CREEK BRIDGE The Waitemata County Council wrote stating that a new structure had been decided upon for this creek, and the Helensville Town Board's contributing share had been assessed at one-forty-eighth. The chairman moved that the Board object to being cited as, a contributing body. Cr. Thompson seconded, and the motion was carried, Cr. Aitkenhead dissenting, stating that Helensville would use the bridge to a certain extent. The chairman was appointed to represent the Board at the Commission set up to assess the . costs. ADDIIIONS TO DAIRY FACTORY. Ground plans for extensive concrete additions to the K. D. F. Co's buildings were j submitted. Estimated cost about £2000. On the motion of Cr. Aitkenhead, seconded by Cr. • Johnson, it was decided a building permit be granted. The clerk - was instructed to point out that i only ground plans had been furn- [ ished.

STORAGE DAM. Cr. Johnson stated it was time the dam was cleaned out. Residents were getting clear water sometimes, and muddy water often, and it was the duty of every Board member to see that users of the water got the pure article. In the course of a general discussion, it was the opinion of members that matters would never be satisfactory until the road difficulty and the catchment area was settled. They had been trying for years to get improvements, but certain interests were "up against them." Some fencing erected by the Board at the dam had been pulled down, and the material burnt. STRAIGHTENING RIVER. As the outcome of a deal of discussion, it was decided that a petition be prepared and circulated, for presentation to the Minister of Public Works, in connection with the above matter. It was stated that an estimate for straightening the river from the railway station to Mt. Rex, prepared before the war, put the cost at £7000. Today it would be nearer £14,000. Accounts were passed for payment.
