RIVER STRAIGHTENING

TO THE EDITOR

SIR, —A resolution carried by the Town Board at its last meeting " That the Government be asked to straighten the river" (presumably from the wharf to the entrance) is a most important one for the whole district, including the waterways of the Kaipara harbour. Notwithstanding any railways that may be built, water carriage must be the Older of the day for all time, and any improvement that will tend to facilitate shipping will also tend to cheapen crrriage and assist settlement.

It is not likely that the Government will undertake any such local work, but they probably would assist, if a constituted authority were established, such as a Harbour or River Board.

Perhaps the Government would he good enough to allow an officer to formulate a harbour improvement scheme, and its probable cost, as a preliminary step for the consideration of the people. —I am, etc.,
