The Kaipara executive of the Farmer's Union meet on Tuesday next at Helensville.
It is stated that .in a recent big land deal in this district, the buyer from the original owner held the property for four days, and then quitted his interest for a clear £4000—£1000 a day !
Special harvest thanksgiving services will be held in the Presbyterian Churches at Helensville, Kaukapakapa, Woodhill and Parakai on Sunday next, March 21st. Atttention is directed to a special announcement elsewhere.
Notice is given that the secretary of the Helensville A. and P. Association will be in attendance at the Farmers' Union board room on March 25th, 26th, and 27th, to pay out prize money in connection with the recent show.
Several meetings of Chautauqua guartors have been held here lately, and it is definitely decided to have a Chautauqua session here from March 30th to April sth. An annoucement appears in this issue, and further particulars will be published next week.
A huge schnapper was on view in the Kaipara Fish Co's window during the week. The fish weighed 261b after being cleaned, and was caught on an ordinary line. After being viewed by a large number of people, the schnapper fascinated a local Maori, who bought it, and departed with every anticipation of a high time.
The St. Patrick's night social hold in the Agricultural Hall last, evening by the Catholic community passed off very successfully, and the large number present spent a most enjoyable time, several musical items were given, thoso contributing being Miss Lyons and Messrs Burke and McGarvey. Supper was provided during the evening.
An important meeting in connection with the Soldiers' Memorial will be held
in the Star Theatre on Thursday evening next. A notice of motion to recind a motion carried in November will be put before tho meeting. It is to be hoped that all who are interested in seeing better .progress being made in regard to the proposed memorial, will attend the meeting, and enter into discussion of tho matter. The following paragraph appeared in the Auckland dailies during the week : — " Regarding tho strike of deck hands on the Kaipara Steamship Company's steamers, officials of the company state that tho full time-table is being adheared to. No trips are being curtailed, all mail contracts are being fulfilled, and no person is denied a passage. It is denied that there is any congestion of cargo, or that consignors have had to ship their own cargo." Dargaville exchanges to hand state that " there is groat congestion of goods in the shed and on the wharf." Mr F. Miranis, who has been stationmaster at Helensville for the past five years, left with his wife and daughter on Tuesday for Wanganui, where he takes up the position of traffic inspector for the Wanganui district. During the time Mr Miranis luis been stationed at Helensville he has made many friends, who will regret his departure. The fishermen especially will lose a good friend, as in his official capacity the late stationmaster looked after the interests of those engaged in the industry to a marked degree. Mr J. Duncan has been appointed statiomnaster at Helensville.

"' .■** : ' '' ,;,, '' It has been decided that during the season the Catholic socials will be held on the second Wednesday in each month. Ratepayers of Otamatea, by an. overwhelming vote of 518 to 79, authorised the County Council to raise a loan of £10,000 to provide three motor tractors, two stone crushing plants complete, ploughs, scarifiers, etc., necessary for metalling and generally improving the roads of the district. The services at the Church of Christ, Helensville will be conducted on Sunday next by Mr Chas. Waterhouse, Dominion. Organiser of the N.Z. Evangelistic and Publication Association. The themo at the Fellowship Service at 11-a.m. will be " A Call to Service " and subject for* the evening is announced as " A Grea,t Day in the Life of a Rich Man." On Monday a special church meeting will be held at 730 p.m. The president of the* Conference (Mr E. Aldridge) and other members of the Executive will be present and address the meeting.
At the last meeting off the Kaipara licensing committee at Dargaville, Sergeant Griffiths read a report regarding the Kaukapakapa hotel, in which it was stated that the hotel was being run in a most unsatisfactory manner. The chair 7 man stated that Constable Hunt had stayed at the hotel and reported that in the morning he could not get breakfast, and that the proprietor and others at the hotel were all drunk. He (the chairman) asked Sergeant Griffiths to intrmate to the proprietor that unless a change in the management was made in 48 hours the committee would consider the refusing of the license at the annual meeting.
