The Minister for Mines has promised, in response to many requests, that a geological survey will be made of the Kaipara district at an early date, to test its mineral wealth.
A Hawke's Bay soldier told a reporter that, in the little over four years he had been at the war, he had been inoculated 17 times, and is now immune from anything except the convincing arguments of Parliamentary candidates.
Attention is directed to the electoral notices appearing in this issue from the returning officers of Eden and Kaipara electorates, dealing with the nomination s of candidates. Such nominations close at the respective offices at Auckland and Dargaville on Monday next, December Bth, at noon.
\.t the last meeting of the Executive of the Kaipara branch of the Farmers' Union, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the organising secretary for the competent manner and keenness displayed in carrying out his duties for the organisation. Statistical returns show an increase of 29 members, making a total of 653.
The Catholic social advertised for Monday, December 15th, in support of the Helensville queen, promises to be an exceptionally good one, as in addition to the usual attractions a number of musical itenn have been arranged for. The euchre prizes will be a special feature, the ladies' being, we are informed, a 21----piece tea-set.
Notices respecting th« licensing polls appear in this issue, and nominations of persons to appoint scrutineers close on Tuesday next, December 9th, at 5 p.m. A. poll will be taken on December 17th in the Kaipara and Eden electorates on the following proposals; Rational Continuance, State Purchase and Control, and National Prohibition. Eden, in addition, will take a poll on the following proposals: Local Restoration, Local No-Lioense. A fiaa) reminder is given of the Bazaar to be held in the Agricultural IJall on Saturday afternoon and evening next, under the auspices of St. Matthew's Ladies' Guild. Preparations are almost completed for a big day on Saturday, and all who attend may look forward to spending an enjoyable and profitable time. A great many attractions will be in evidence, and a quantity of material and goods is ready for sale. A record attendance and record prices were registered at, the Dilworth Bale of pedigree cattle at Papatoetoe en Monday last. The highest priced cow sold wasDainty vn of Darbalard (No. 274), which was purchased by Mr P. J. McLeod, of Helensville, for- the sum of 365 guineas. i Dilworth Chico (Vol. Ill) was purchased by Mr L. McLeod, of Helensville, for ; 100 guineas. Th.c bishop of the diqeese was going to pay q, visit to the cquntry vicarage, and, the vicar was telling Y\\s little son that j he must be very good, and if \\\q bishqp spoke to him he was to call him "my lord," In due course the bishop arrived, and when, later, he was introduced to the vicar's small boy, he asked kindly : " Well, my little man, and hew old are you ?" To which the little fellow nervously replied, " My God, I'm seven." At his lecture on Monday night Mr Dawson told a rather amusing story which will no doubt appeal to some of the " wots" of the district. In a big saloon in Baltimore in pre-prohibition days, a man was giving .a thirsty friend ; some good advice. "When you have had enough whisky," said he, "you should always ca)l for Sars'apariila." !'
