DISTRICT NEWS.

KAUKAPAKAPA-

[Own Correspondent!

Last week the local school children gave a very fine peformance of the cantata, "The Rose of Joy/ The children were very prettily dngfced in fancy costume and some^r* the scenes were particularrf°" charming. Great credit is reflected on those who trained the children for their parts. The programme opened with a pianoforte duet by Misses Sinclair and Henley, followed by a laughable sketch, "Ten Httle Nigger Boys." After the cantata, a dance concluded a very enjoyable evening. A large number were present, and the funds of the Anglican Church, on whose behalf the performance was given should receive, a substantial sum.

A meeting of interest to all ratepayers was held on Saturday last in the Dairy Flat sc- ;01, to consider the proposal to -[vide the present Waitemaia unty and form a now county Iv i the ridings of Kaukapakapa, W inui, Birkenhead, Takapuu.t, and Pukeatua. About 40 delegates were present, Messrs Dye, Cole, and Milligan forming the local party. The promoter of-'the scheme, Mr W. Escott, was voted to the chair, and considerable progress made. A Ratepayers' League was formed, Mr Brown, of Whangaparoa, being elected president, and Mr Johns, of Silverdale, secretary. The object of the League is to push forward the scheme for the formation qf the proposed new county, and all ratepayers are invited to becqme members. This certainly is a move in th,e right d.ireptioji, as great dissatisfaction has been manifested in the nast through mal-administration. Our local members have done their best and served us well, b.ut the area of the present county is far too, big, say for one engineer, for instance, to supervise.

At the close of the meeting afternoon tea was provided by the ladies,

During the afternoon, Mr A, 12. Qreenslade, Opposition Liberal candidate for Waitemata, addressed the meeting.

Your co-respondent noticed a splendid field of newly-cat hay this week on the farm of Mr H. C, Henley. Surely this is the first hay cut in the district this season.

The Summer Fair to be held next week promises to be a great success. It is hoped that a good number will enter the variqus competitions, A trophy h^,s been promised b,v Mr E. Virtue, of Champion farne^, for. th,e highest r(um.ber of points in. the cookery class, w,hile many other prizes are to be awarded.
