The Kaipara & Waitemata ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE" HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20. SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL.

THE public meeting called for Monday evening last, to discuss the proposed soldiers' memorial, was attended by fourteen people, who, after waiting some time for more to turn up, decided that the number present was not sufficient nor representative enough to decide the question of a suitable memorial for departed soldiers. . It practically amounts to this: Out of a population of eight hundred odd in Helensville, to say nothing of these resident over the river, there are apparently not more than a couple of dozen people sufficiently interested in the erection of a memorial, to take the trouble of attending a meeting. The decision to establish some form of war memorial was arrived at during the war, and was taken up with enthusiasm by the town and district. But with the ces■ation of hostilities, interest lagged, and as the war and all it | meant has receded further and further away as the months passed, so has the memory —in the minds of all except those who | lost loved ones —of sacrifices made by those who have " gone west " been dimmed. It is a pity that the question of a suitable I tribute was not settled when it ! was first proposed. That cannot |be helped now, and no excuse can be offered for* neglecting the I matter any longer. A.nother I meeting is called for Monday I evening next, and the few who have this matter at heart are not expecting too much when they ! hope to see present considerably | more than attended on Monday I evening last.
