HELENSVILLE TENNIS CLUB.
REVIVING INTEREST
A meeting called for Thursday night of last week, to consider the revival of the above club, was fairly well attended. MrM. Matheson was voted to the chair,' and emphasised the desirability of re-starting the Club, interest in which had lapsed duiing the past few years owing to the war. The club had certain financial .obligations, and apart from these the chief concern of members would be in the direction of immediately getting two of the courts asphalted. If this was done at once, probably play would cqmrnence about the middle of November.
It was unanimously decided to re-start the Club, and to this end a provisional committee was set up. Mr W. Allen, who has been secretary for a number of years, stated that owing to business affairs, he would not be able to again take up the position of secretary, and tendered his resignation. In accepting this resignation with regret, the chairman spoke of the past good services rendered to the Club by Mr Allen, and moved a vote of thanks to that^ gentleman, which was carried by acclamation.
Mr.J\ K. Stewart was appointed secretary pro tern.
The appointment of officials will take place at the annual general meeting, to be held on a date to be fixed.
As a start towards raising the very necessary funds required by the Club, it was decided to hold a social on Labour night (next Monday), and a committee was elected from those present to carry out the necessary details of this function.
On Monday evening the social committee held a meeting, and furthered details in connection with the social. It was also decided- those present — Mrs Sewell, Miss"es Eames and Forrester, and Messrs Matheson, Stewart, Claridge, and Pengelly —canyass the town and distriot for intending members and honorary members. The subscriptions are fixed at: Gentlemen £1 ss, ladies 15s. It was decided that it he a recommendation to the genera! meeting that the entranceffee for new members be abolished,
Prospects for a good season are very bright, and with projected revivals of the Kaukapakapa, Parakai, Waimauku, and Woodhill clubs, some good tennis is anticipated during the season. In deciding to asphalt at least two courts, the local club has made a wise move. If tar and sand can be procured immediately, and there is every prospect of this, the courts should be playable towards the middle of November. The club is committed to a heavy expenditure in getting the courts asphalted, and to raise funds is the main object of the committee this season. It is anticipated that the social on Monday night will be largely attended, aqd a good time is guaranteed all who are present.
