HELENSVILLE A. AND P. ASSOCIATION.
ANNUAL MEETING,
The arr^Slmeeting of the above Association was held in the Agricultural Hall on Monday evening last. Mr N. W. Rimmer (president) occupied the chair, and-there were present about twenty-five members, and the secretary (Mr L. L. Bailey).
The minutes of the last annual meeting and two ordinary meetings during the year were read and confirmed. —Notices of —
Mr F. W. Strange proposed the following notice of motion: "That only financial members be provided with luncheon ticketß on Show day." Mr A. J. Garry seconded.
A good deal of discussion arose over this matter, the majority of members being of the opinion that the present financial position of the Association did not warrant the extra outlay involved in providing such tickets.
Mr Jas. McLeod moved an amendment : "That consideration of this matter be left to the Executive Committee." —
Seconded by Mr J. C. Rimmer.
The amendment on being put to the meeting was lost, and the motion was also lost.
Mr G. W. Sim moved: "That any member who has been a member of the Association for 10 years become a life member." Seconded by Mr N. W. Rimmer.
In supporting his motion, Mr Sim said that his motion was more of a protest in raising the subscription from 10s to £1 Is. Members who had paid into the show year in and year out were entitled to Ihis privilege.
Mr Barnes stated that members who were pJucky enough to put down money originally to start the show deserved to be life members.
Mr M. Matheson regretted that there were so many members who had not paid up their subs. Many apparently did not realise the .great benefit the show was to the district. He considered a guinea subscription a. very small amount as against the privileges which went with membership. There was no farmer in the district who could not afford such subscription.
Mr Jas. McLeod was strongly opposed to the motion, which he considered would be a suicidal thing to carry out. To buy the ground many settlers "came to light1' well. A guinea was not too much to pay for a day's amusement. After further discussion, Mr Sim withdrew the motion. —Balance Sheet — The secretary then read the balance sheet, the outstanding item being the loss on the show account of £51 Bs. The chief features of the balance sheet are embodied in the secretary's annual report, which follows: —Annual Report.— The Committee have pleasure in submitting to you the 20th annual report of the Association. The Committee desire to extend to those members who have been on active service, and who have returned a hearty welcome home, and trust that they may long be spared to assist the Association in the interests of agriculture, and the development of stock for shows. To the relations of those who made the supreme sacrifice deep and sincere sympathy is extended. Show Balance-sheet, — This shows a loss of £51 Bs, Printing and advertising cost £98 7s 9d, against which we have receipts and sale of catalogues £36 15s Id, leaving a net cost of £6112s 2d. Against this also you will note that £30 has been paid to the general account for the use of the grounds and hall for show day. The entry fees totalled £108 19s, £1 7s more than year. Member's Fees.—By resolution passed last year the member's fees were raised from 10s to £1 Is. The total amount collected was £65, against £62, an increase of £3. There is much argument on this matter, as to the wisdom of raising the fee. The life member's fee was raised to £10 10s. You will note the president, who gave shares to the value of £5 ss, has contributed another £5 ss. , Trophies totalled £70, against £48 the previous year, an increase of £22. Caoh donations totalled £91 15s 6d, compared with £105 4s the previous year, a decrease of £13 Bd. Included in the above are five silver cups which the Association were fortunate enough to have donated. Mr A. Bell's cup, value £10 10s, for most points in cattle 'and sheep classes, was won by Mr Jt. Harper, of Woodhill, with 32 points. Te Kokopu Estate 29 points. Mr N. W. Rimmer's cup, value £6 6s, for moßt points in dairy classes, was also won by Mr R. Harper, with 32 points. M* Jas. Hand's cup, value £5 ss, for besJ|oE&in North Auckland district, was wcSypMr J, Ambury, [Further items from the report will s~-' appear next issue], —Finance — Mr Matheson, manager of the local branch of the Union Bank, spoke at length on, the financial affairs of the Association, and went into the matter thoroughly. He regretted that the .£~\ Association had gone baok during the ? past two y ears, and hoped that the next '' show would reverse the loss shown on the balance sheet and turn out a financial success. It was a terribly bad thing to have to reduce the prize money 15 %. Entries in some classes last show were very poor, and did riot pay. He was also of the opinion that the Association had too; many classes—last year's total being actually more than Auckland. —General — It was the opinion of those present that unfinancial members were not a bit
of use to the Association, and that steps should be taken to get subs, paid up. —Election of Officers. — The following officers were elected for the 1919-20 season :— Patrons : J.
