A SURPLUS BABY

My Wellington correspondent writes : "A 'Digger' who recentlyreturned to this city on a troopship from England brought a baby with him, the property of other people who cannot be found. The custodian of the kid naturally expected that its papa and mamma would be down on the wharf when the boat made fast, eager and anxious to regain possession of their long-lost child. But they didn't show up, and (up to the time of writing) cannot be found. Meantime the police have got the baby, and the unfortunate ' Digger' (who must have had an enviable time as dry-nurse for six or seven weeks) has been relieved of a very embarrassing situation.
