A KNOWING CONSTABLE.

" Did the lady look as if she had just got out of bed ?" was the question put to a police constable in a country Court last week. Robert smiled. " She did not look as if she had just got out of bed," h« replied, " I know pretty well how they look when they get out of bed. They all look alike." . And he smiled more broadly than ever. A most ungallant witness ! It was as well, perhaps, that he was not required to enter into further particulars. Reminds me of a story a lady friend of mine once told me. She shared a saloon cabin on the run from Auckland to Sydney with another lady—a total stranger. This lady proved to be of " a certain age," and took a very long time to prepare for bed. When, at last, she got into her bunk (to quote the words of my friend) " she appeared to have put most of herself away in little cardboard boxes."
