WAIROA 22 .v. KAIPARA 6.

«( Special Reporter), latch between the Kaipara and Wairoa rep. teams, which was played at Dargaville on Saturday last, resulted in a substantial win for the home fifteen, although spectators are of the opinion that the game was of a much more even character than the scores would indicate. o^Kaipara, who were challengers for the Harding shield, which the Wairoa Union hold, were unsuccessful this time in bringing back that coveted trophy, but are determined that next season will see a triumphant return with the spoils of war. About 300 watched the game. The teams were as follows : — Wairoa.—Spiers, Watene, Harrison, Borrie, Gould (captain), Brown. Thompson, Hume (2), Ootterell, Jervis, Martin, Beazley, Lowe and Audley. Kaipara.—Full-back, Mouatt; three-quarters, Morrison, Mather, V. McLeod ; five-eighths, Hinton, Wallace ; half, Little ; forwards, Larson, Mcßride, Russell, C. McLeod, Fletcher, D. Bradly, Wright (capt.), Mills. Kaipara won the toss, and J kicked off with the sun at their I backs. After an interchange of kicks, Wairoa was penalised for off-side. Mouatt made a good attempt at goal, but just missed. From the drop-out, Wairoa rushed the play to Kaipara's 25, which resulted in a touch-down. From the kick-off a fine passing rush by the Wairoa backs ended in Gould scoring, to which try Martin added the extra points — Wairoa 5, Kaipara 0. The home team continued to press, and after lively play the visitors forced down. Give and take play followed, chiefly between the backs, and the first quarter ended. From the kick-off play started in Wairoa's 25, but off-side by the visitors brought play back to Kaipara's 25, and from a scrum Little sent the ball down field again. At this stage off-side play by Wairoa gave the visitors a penalty kick, from which C. -—McLeod landed a beautiful goal —Wairoa 5, Kaipara 3. Play became very .willing at this stage and Mouatt stopped a dangerous rush. Off-side play gave Wairoa a free kick, and Martin landed a nice goal—Wairoa 8, Kaipara 3. Play evened up a bit, and a good dribbling rush commenced, headed by Russell, but the Kaipara forwards over-ran the ball, and lost an almost certain try, From the play-out Wairoa was penalised. C. MeLeod failed with the kick. Kaipara forced the game for some time in Wairoa's 25, where Wallace marked; Mouatt, with a fine kick, just missed a goal. Half time was called with the score — Wairoa 8", Kaipara 3. From the kick-off Wairoa rushed the ball to the visitors' 25, where Little eased the situation by a good kick well down the field. Wairoa again came back, and. from a scrum the backs started a good passing rush, nearly scoring, and compelling Kaipara to force. From the kick-out the visiting forwards worked the ball well down the field, but from a scrum Wairoa took the play back to Kaipara's ' 25, Good play by Mouatt, Wallace, and Fletcher took the ball back again, but from a scrum Wairca heeled out, and brilliant passing by the home backs re- • suited in Martin scoring in the corner, Martin took the kick, which missed—Wairoa 11, Kai--1 • para 3. From the drop-out Russell headed a dribbling rush, assisted by Mills and Bradly, and the ball went out in Wairoa's 25. From the line-out the home forwards took play back, where C. McLeod relieved the situation. At this stage the game was very willing, and Wairoa backs got possession, resulting in Harrison scoring. Martin kicked an easy goal—Wairoa 16, Kaipara 3. Play evened up a bit, and an interchange of kicks resulted. M^^^-marked, and sent the balPlWback. From even play Wairoa marked, and Martin -•'faited with the kick at goal. Kaipara forwards at this stage asserted themselves ; C. McLeod had tne misfortune to injure himself and had to go off, being replaced by Baker, who went to full-back, Mouatt being moved up to ' three-quarters, Flay com j**jfcued for a few minutes,. when the change /over for the last quarter came. From the playout Wairoa had the best of the game, and only good play by Fletcher kept them from scoring. »*"' Gould here made a nice opening, passing to Harrison, who made a good run and transferred to Hume, who got over. but good defensive work by Kaipara forwards held them in check ; Mather stopped a dangerous rush by Wairoa, and forced. From the kick-off play went to half, but off-side, play gave Mouatt a kick at goal which failed. Wairoa became again aggressive, and fine passing by their backs resulted in Harrison scoring. Mai tin's kick again missed, just going under the bar. —Wairoa 22, Kaipara 3. Good work by V. McLeod and Mather took play to Wairoa 25, but the home forwards worked the ball back to the opposing 25, where from a scrum they lost a certain try by a throw on. From a scrum Kaipara got possession, and passing between McLeod, Morrison, and Fletcher resulted in Fletcher scoring. The kick failed. —Wairoa 22, Kaipara 6. Play continued for a couple of minutes, and the game ended. Mr Walker referred in an impartial manner.

The -members of the Kaipara team speak highly of the hospitality extended them during their trip. At half-time the Wairoa ladies provided refreshments, which were much appreciated, In the evening both teams were entertained at the Commercial Hotel, Maungawhare, and a splendid spread was put on by the host and hostess, Mr and Mrs Allen. A smoke concert was afterwards held when the usual speech-making was indulged in.

The senior game —Helensville v. Waimauku —will be played on the Showgrounds on Saturday.
