SHORT WEIGHT.

Do you ever take the trouble to weigh the goods you purchase at the shops ? Some people find it a good plan, and " a War Bride" is amongst them. This lady writes to the Auckland evening paper : "It is a disgrace to the women of Auckland to submit tamely to be fleeced. For instance, I ask for 61bs of potatoes, they barely scale 41 bs when I come to weigh them ; for 21bs apples I get 1-Mlbs ; lib of sausages scale 12oz ; lib bananas lOoz ; 3 yards cretonne measure 224 yds ; lib steak weighs 120z." I am afraid this correspondent is not far out in complaining that short-weight is frequently given jn Auckland. The substitution of inferior goods to those exposed in the window is also rather common, especially in the case of fruit. Personally I have found the Chinese fruiterers give better weight than the white shopkeepers, as a rule.
