ANOTHER £100 TO GO UP IN SMOKE

In spite of the many protests against the squandering of another £100 on the Mt. Eden bonfire those responsible for this piece of inexcusable folly are busied in preparing bonfire No. 2, and there is some talk, I understand, of the effigies of notorious Huns being provieed to heighten the interest of the proceedings on the eventful night. It is proposed —or was proposed —to have the " counterfeit presentments " of the Kaiser, yon Bissing, Bethman Holwegg, "Little Willie," and one or two more dangling from the 90ft high structure, including, I should suppose, the author of the "iHymn of Hate." The local papers condemn the idea of the effigies as smacking of vulgar triumph. If you ask me I may say I consider the whole thing is silly and childish in the extreme, and more worthy of a lot of school boys than of a public body like the City Council, which is, I understand, responsible for this tomfoolery.
