A BLANKET SHORTAGE.

Some kind-hearted lady, in a letter to our morning paper, suggests that the poor of Auckland who are short of blankets and quite unable to buy them, especially at the existing fearfully high prices, should line old sheets or quilt-covers with brown paper and. use them as substitutes for blankets. The suggestion is an excellent one. There is an astonishing amount of warmth to be got out of brown paper, or even ordinary newspaper. The shortage of blankets (which is, of course, the cause of the high prices of these things) is due to all the looms having been employed for goodness knows how long now in making tweeds. But wholesalers tell me that in a few months' time from date the N.Z. mills will be turning out blankets in abundance. Meantime anyone who has not enough blankets to keep the cold out should try brown paper. It's good. I know because I have* tried it myself when camping out.
