THE MT EDEN BONFIRES.

And so the Mount Eden bonfire is to be once more erected — presumably at the expenditure of another £100, or more. The Council's engineer undertakes to have bonfire No. 2 ready to light ten days before it is wanted, thus leaving but a short interval between the completion of the stack and the lighting up. But that interval ihould be quite long enough for history to repeat itself in, and the original bonfire having been set ablaze before the proper time who is to say that the same thing may not happen again? If it does not happen again it will be because of the extraordinary vigilance of those told off to keep watch and ward. Rain, however heavy, must not deter them next time from sticking to their posts. It is somewhat cool, these nights, on the top of Mount Eden, but if bonfire No, 2 is not to share the fate of bonfire No. 1 the watchers will have to keep on the job all night as well as all day. I don't envy them.
