£100 TO GO UP IN SMOKE.
The proposal of the Mo,unt Eden Borougbr Council % exnpnd the sum of o>ne hundred pounds on a large bonfire oh the submit of Mount Ellen by way of celebrating the*signing of the Peace Treaty is exciting a good deal of hostile . criticism in this city. And very properly. Such wanton waste, of money is positively disgraceful. The bonfire, which is to be 100 feet high, cannot possibly behefit anybody and the only^purpose it can serve will be to amuse (?), for an hour or two, the crowd sure to assemble," at a cost, of say £20 or £30 per hour. Far .'fetter would it be to entlfctaiQ. poor people at a dinner, or elongate the^money to the needs of'^^eturned^soldiers requiring financial help! 3 Rut to send a hundred pounds ./p in smoke! Will the ratepayers who will have to fork out" stand it? I don't think so.
