THE PEACE CELEBRATIONS

The decision of the New Zealand Government to hold our peace celebrations on the signing of the preliminary peace, instead of on the signing of the final peace is occasioning a good deal of comment in Auckland, many people being of opinion, that it would be quite time enough to ring the joy-bells and all the rest of if after peace is finnally declared. Much may happen betwixt now and then. • We all remember the premature rejoicings which took place in Auckland, and elsewhere, when it was first announced that Germany had surrendered, and which report had to be denied because it was "too previous." England proposes to defer her peace rejoicings until July, and it would have been far better if New Zealand had followed suit. I am heartily in accord with the Mayor of Auckland in thinking that such an important event as the conclusion of peace should be celebrated on the same date throughout the British Empire.
