AFTER THE HOLIDAYS
The rush to the Banks after the.'holidays was tremendous, and the staffs of those institutions §had a lively time of it. You cannot suspend banking operations in a city the size of Auckland for days together without the greatest inconveni-' ence being occasioned to the public. And this year the Banks were closed not only during the Easter holidays, but on the Wednesday after Easter as well. This was in henour of Saint George. The Banks, by the way, are absolutely the only public institutions in the Dominion which observe the Saints' Days as holidays, in fact these days are not recognised by any other businesses, and as the Saints are mere myths it is a little difficult to understand why, in the twentieth century, the absurdity of hon°nring individuals with about as much claim to respect as Jack the Giant Killer or Little Red Riding Rood —and about as real—should be persisted in. Why not even the school-children are allowed to make holiday on Saints' Days.
