A GOOD NEW ACT.
The Slaughtering and Inspection Amendment Act, whose provisions aim at keeping the Meat Trust out of New Zealand, came into force last week. Under this measure it is an offence to carry on the business of meat exporter unless authorised by a meat export license issued by the Minister for Agriculture, who is given absolute discretion to grant or refuse any application. The license is to b* for one year, and may be revoked by the Minister at any time if the licensee commits a breach of the terms of the license. or if he carries on business in a manner contrary to the public interest. The maximum penalty for'carrying on th« business of a meat exporter illegally is fixed at £1000, with a further £200 for every day during which the business is continued after service of a notice requiring the business to be discontinued.
