APPEALS FROM SERVICE

CASES HEARD AT HELENSVILLE

Various appeals were considered by the First Auckland Military Service Board at Helensville on 17th inst. Harry Newman (Mr Moody), farm manager, Pouto, was exempted until February 6, and the case of James Newman (Mr Field), dairy farmer, Helensville, was adjourned sine die. John Patrick Hand, farmer, Helensville, was exempted until] March 6. Augustus Tilby, marine engineer, Helensville, was exempted until March 6, for domestic reasons, similar time bains given Thomas Myers, farmer, Ranganui. Luther Taylor (Mr Hall Skelton), farmer, Paparoa, a married man with two children, classed Cl, and the only man on the farm, was granted a sine die adjournment. John Morrison, farmer, Kaipara Flats, classed Cl, said he was working 582 acres, his only assistant being a lad of 16 years years. His appeal was adjourned sine die. Herbert Russell Scott, farmer, Kaipara Flats, was exempted' until March 6, while Harry Sanderson, farm hand, Tauhoa, a sole surviving son of military age, was granted a side die adjournment. Ernest A. Sheldon, farmer Tamarata, ' had his appeal adjourned until January 31, to enable him to dispose, if possible, of his farm. George E. Smith, farmer, Makarau, stated that he was working his own farm and that of his brother on active service. His appeal was adjourned sine die, as was that of Charles Ball, dairy farmer, Matakohe, the only man on a farm of 405 acres. John Hutcheson, dairy farmer, Port Albert, was exempted until January 9, and Charles Quaife, builder, Paparoa, until February 6. The case of Carl G. Sandin, chemist, Helensville, was referred to the Pharmacy Board, Wellington. Alex. Bell's appeal for his farm manager, Francis W. Strange, Helensville, was dismissed, but the Board ordered further enquiries to be made in regard to the essential work on Strange's own farm.
