A FIVE DAY WEEK
The proprietors of one of our clothing factories having decided to try the experiment of a fiveday working week, the heads of nine other clothing factories have concluded to do likewise. The new departure is to continue for four {months, after which —" we shall see." If the system proves successful it will probably be adopted by factories not connected with the clothiug trade, and be made to apply to male as well as female operatives, I remember a Sydney labour agitator, when I lived in the City of the BeautifulHarbour, advocating a four-hour working day. We have not quite arrived at that blissful state of things as yet, but the five-day working week is a step towards it. It remains to be seen whether the output of the factories will prove as large under the new order of things as it was under the old. The permanence of the (system must depend entirely on that.
