RED GROSS EFFORT.

HELENSVILLE QUEEN

CARNIVAL.

This movement received great assistance from the Girls' Friendly Society last week. On Thursday they gave a really high-class entertainment which was much appreciated by the large audience The play, " Only a Hoax," was splendidly enacted. Miss V. Dallas and Miss M. Forrester, as maiden ladies, guardians of two rather troublesome girls, were the life of the play, as also were Misses M. Rawlinson and E. Donovan (their wards). Misses A. Simcock and N, Frood, as the lovers (disguised as Lady Porker and Miss Trotter) whom the girls meet at the inn, gave a perfect delineation of the part. Misses E. Bradly and F.Ross (friends of the heroines), and Miss E Eames (as Sarah, the servant), were also deserving of praize. The recitation by Miss Forrester, and the fancy dances by Miss E. Sim were greatly enjoyed, A very pretty dance was given by eight girls in fancy costume. We understand another performance will be given after the Carnival season is over in aid of the Girls' Friendly Society Lodge, #nd hope their effort will draw a bumper house, so that such a deserving institution's funds may benefit considerably.

Friday evening the Kazoo Band, in their striking costumes, marched down to the Hall, gathering in a good amount of cash. They gave some fine vocal and instrumental items, and then adjourned to the farewell social given in honour of Privates R. Constable and R. Fifield.

Saturday afternoon last the Garden F§te at Mrs Elletfs was a great success. The weather perfect, the Kazoo Band discoursed music, and " all went merrily as a marriage bell." * * ♦

On Friday (to-morrow) a Hard" up Social will be held in the Star Theatre. * * *

A River Excursion is arranged for Sunday next, boat leaving at 9 a.m.
