RED CROSS
" OUR DAY " APPEAL.
QUEEN. CARNIVAL FOR
HELENSVILLE.
AT the Agricultural Hall Social on Thursday evening last Mr C. F. Bickford, Hon. Organiser for the Red Cross, made a strong appeal to his audience to give all they possibly could to the Red Cross Funds. He said that as far as he was concerned, if this war lasted another, two years he would be left without a penny, and that any person possessing a Bank account at the end of the war should be ashamed to "look a returned soldier in the face. It was astonishing the large amount of money that went through the totalisator, and was paid away on picture shows, yet the public begrugded parting up for a most urgent cause like the Red Cross. The people of New Zealand did not really know the seriousness of this awful strife. If he had advertised that there would be a dance that evening he felt sure the Hall would have been packed to the doors, yet on an occasion like the present it Was only half-filled. The speaker gave some interesting facts and figures in connection with the work of the Red Cross, and suggested that as a means of raising money Helensville should hold a Queen Carnival.
On the following afternoon Mr Bickford addressed a meeting in the Star Theatre, and it was finally decided to hold a Queen Carnival.
A public meeting will be held to-night (Thursday) in the Star Theatre, when nominations will be received for queens to compete in the forthcoming Carnival. Everyone is earnestly requested' to attend.
