RED CROSS BENEFIT
The Catholic Church Committee are to be congratulated on the success of the Red Cross benefit social promoted by them, and which eventuated in the Agricultural Hall on Monday evening,, last. There ( was a big attendance, and though not a great many appeared in fancy dress, those who did were exceptionally well got up. The euchre tournament was wall patronised, and the ladies' prize (an ebony and silver brush presented by Mrs McCarthy) was won by Mrs Farrell. Mr Garry, the highest scorer among the gentlemen, was the recipient of a silvermounted pipe, which was donated by Mr W. Smith. There were also several guessing competitions, and dancing was continued throughout the evening, Miss Ritnmer presiding at the piano. A splendid supper was handed round, and everything possible done to make the evening a most enjoyable one, which it certainly was. Among the fancy costumes we noted the following :— Mrs Tucker, Hed Cross Nurse Miss M. Dowling, Superstition Miss D. Dowling, Kaipara ECHO Miss F. McDonald, Gipsy Dancer Miss I. Stanaway, Quaker Girl Miss A. Dowling, Pierette Miss K. Dowling, Pierette Miss E. Donovan, School Girl Miss L. Oarleton, Gretchen Miss E. Smith, Nurse Miss V.Dallas, Geisha Girl Miss Irvine, J#p. ) Mies M. Qvamj£Sp.anHi Dancer Mrs Schick, My S#ðeart Mr L. Johnson, 'Baclc to the Front ' Mr A. Hunter, Clown Mr J. Bell, Clown Mr Williams, Champion Mr W. Cullen, Mandarin Mr Woodbrige, Cricketer Mr W. Cantell, Fireman The two " hard-ups," C. Kelly and W. Geldard, were splendidly got-up, and ooked their parts in every detail from the sole of their boots to crown of their heads. The guessing competitions resulted as follows .-—Tray Cloth, Miss Burgess ; cost of cake (5/6), Mrs Pudney; contents of cake (coin), Mrs Hafford. The cakes were donated by Mrs Jas. Hand, and Mrs Tucker respectively. The proceeds, which amounted to £10, will be forwarded to the Red Cross Funds.
