DISTRICT NEWS.

KAUKAPAKAPA.

| OWN CORRESPONDENT |

A large and enthusiastic meeting of dairy farmers was held at Kaukapakapa on July 2nd. to meet the chairman'of directors, the local director, and the manager of . the Kaipara Dairy Company to consider the ariyis- • pPity of supporting the project ij|||erect a dried milk factory in Helensville. After an exhaustive explanation had been given, as to the process of manufacture and the probable price to be paid for butter-fat, most of those present decided to fall in with scheme, and signed the Bank bond required.

On July 6th a large meeting of dairymen, representing besides this district, Wainui, Hoteo North, Wellsford, Makarau, Glorit, and North Albert! and, was held under the auspices of the Farmers' Union. This meeting was called to consider the question of the co-operative carting of cream. This matter has been a burning one for some years, and a long discussion was entered into, when both sides were ably represented. Finally a resolution, " That it be a strong recommendation to the directors of the Kaipara Dairy Factory that the whole cost of. carriage of cream from the supplier's gate to the factory be a charge on the working expenses of the Company," was carried by a large majority.

At the conclusion of this meeting, those present listened to an interesting and able address by Mr Tancred Cooper, organiser of the Farmers' Union. Mr Cooper pointed out the vital need of organisation of farmers, both in their own interests and in the interests of the nation as a whole. He showed how the farmer is being exploited both when he sells his produce, and when he buys supplies, and showed that only by co-operative effort could he get the full return for his labour. Mr Cooper answered many questions, and cleared away slight obscurities, and those present unanimously decided to join the sub provincial district, with Helensville as the centre. It was also decided that the subscription be £110s per annum, farmers recognising that good can not *be done without ample

funds.
